Kids get jet lag just like adults, but they show it differently — as fussiness, trouble falling asleep, or waking up at night. The good news: with a bit of preparation and plenty of daytime light, little ones often adjust surprisingly fast.
Kids work a bit differently
Younger children have a more stable but less flexible rhythm. They benefit a lot from fixed routines and daylight. Don't expect a baby to adjust right away — plan the first few days to be relaxed and free of a tight schedule.
Ease into it before the flight
Shift sleep and meal times gradually toward the destination time zone a few days before you travel. For shorter time differences, this is often enough on its own. For the flight, familiar stuffed animals, snacks, and a calm sleep environment help too.
At your destination: light and patience
Take your child outside during the day — daylight is the strongest cue for resetting the body clock and works fastest. Keep to the local bedtime in the evening, and stay calm and quiet if they wake up at night, so the body learns what nighttime means.
